GREENER LEICESTER AWARDS ARE A GREAT SUCCESS!!

The 7th Annual Greener Leicester Awards, held on Tuesday 29th November 2011, showed off a new venue, a new format and a lot of new examples of environmental ingenuity. Hosted by De Montfort University in the Queens Building the awards were attended by over 100 people and celebrated the best environmental contributions from a range of groups and individuals in Leicester.

For the first time this year the awards was preceded by three workshops on The District Heating Scheme in Leicester, Sustainable Food Networks and Installing PV Panels at home. All of the workshops were well attended and were followed by a buffet and drinks which people were able to enjoy whilst perusing some of the invited stalls which included Transition Leicester, Just Fairtrade, La Leche, The Princes Trust and more.

The Master of Ceremonies for the evening was BBC Radio Leicester’s very own Tony Wadsworth who was referred to by Deputy Mayor, Councillor Rory Palmer as “a legend”. Councillor Palmer delivered the keynote speech on the night and fielded questions from the audience. He passionately reaffirmed the City Council’s commitment to the environment and the Mayor’s vision for a low carbon Leicester even in the current climate of public sector cuts.

The accolades were awarded over seven categories with winners including Highcross Leicester in the Business category for its environmental management system ISO14001, Evington Valley Primary School for its EMAS in schools project, the University of Leicester for its Big Green Week in the FE category, Leicester City Council for the Watermead Climate Trail and Groundwork Leicester and Leicestershire/Bikes for All for the Life of a Recycled Bike project in the Community Organization Category.

A special Young Persons Award, sponsored by The Princes Trust, was presented to Karter Singh Bring who joined Groundwork Leicester and Leicestershire as a Future Jobs Fund placement but has since been employed permanently by the organization and undertakes marketing support, the management of volunteers and sales and marketing for Recycling Solutions.

The prestigious Greener Leicester Award was presented by Deputy Mayor, Councilor Rory Palmer to Rebecca James of Groundwork Leicester and Leicestershire for their very successful EMAS in Schools project. Councilor Palmer said, “All of the applicants need congratulating for the excellent work they do and I hope they will continue to do. The EMAS in schools project is an excellent example of best practice from the point of view of working with young people in schools to create awareness and behavior change that will have a major impact and help us to achieve our ambition of making Leicester a low carbon City.”
