Environment Partnership Board

Chair - Councillor Sarah Russell

The Climate Change programme Board has been set up by the Leicester Partnership to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide and other unwanted gases entering the atmosphere from Leicester. Figures show that Leicester emits over two million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year, coming from industry and commerce, traffic and transport, and homes.

Carbon Dioxide is called a greenhouse gas and is thought to be responsible for keeping more of the suns energy trapped in the atmosphere; the additional energy is thought to be responsible for changing our weather patterns.

Part of climate change is air quality, and when we use our vehicles or burn anything we release small particles into the air. These particles are bad for health particularly in the young.

The Board is comprised of two parts; the Main Board responsible for the way we tackle climate change, and a delivery part that is responsible for projects to reduce emissions.

The delivery part of the Board will:

  • Looking at proposals for projects to reduce carbon dioxide emissions
  • Act as technical help to the Partnership

  • Advise the Main Board on strategy

  • Raise awareness of climate change issues that effect businesses and people in Leicester.
