Leicester ranks as the 20th most deprived local authority area in England in the 2007 Indices of Multiple Deprivation 2007, compared to being 31st in the 2004 indices.
The Indices of Multiple Deprivation 2007 combines a number of indicators. They were chosen to cover a range of economic, social and housing issues, into a single deprivation score for each small area in England. This allows each area to be ranked relative to one another according to their level of deprivation.
As with the 2004 indices, the Indices of Deprivation 2007 have been produced at Lower Super Output Area level (LSOA). LSOAs cover areas of about 1500 people, and there are 32,482 LSOAs over the whole of England, 187 of which are in Leicester.
The Indices are used widely to analyse patterns of deprivation, identify areas that would benefit from special initiatives or programmes and as a tool to determine eligibility for specific funding streams.

Deprivation Figures for Leicester
The Leicester Partnership decided that the priority areas for the city would be those Leicester LSOAs that fall into the bottom 5% in England. In the 2007 index there are 22 LSOAs in that category.

An IMD 2007 toolkit to allow you to identify Lower Super Output areas and their respective priority is available for download below as well. The spreadsheet contains a postcode lookup tool which allows you to put in a postcode to find out which LSOAs are in that postcode area, the deprivation rankings and the priority for that area as well as the full IMD 2007 deprivation rankings for Leicester.
On 30th January 2008, Leicester Partnership Executive considered the approach to priority areas in the light of the new indices. A number of options are currently under consderation. A report on these Options for Priority Areas can also be downloaded below.
